Battle of the Books

The purpose of the Battle of the Books is to encourage continued reading for the enjoyment of all students at the high school level. The game-style competition format creates interest and excitement in reading. Through the fun and excitement of the competition, students improve reading skills, mature in their choices of reading materials, and acquire a broader knowledge base.

A committee from the North Carolina School Library Media Association (NCSLMA) creates an annual list of 15 books based on NCSLMA member recommendations. The books are selected based on their literary merits, and the committee is careful to choose books that vary in length, difficulty, and subject matter.

Meetings: Beginning in November, there will be monthly meetings/practice sessions after school in the media center. During club meetings, students will discuss the books and practice answering trivia questions about them. The book list for the program contains 15 books. Team members are asked to read all of the books on the list to prepare for the competitions.

What is Beta Club?
Beta Club is a non-profit, youth organization, and academic service club designed to allow students to collaborate to benefit and uplift the community.

Membership Requirements
--maintain an unweighted GPA of 3.5 or higher and at least 1 semester of HS Credit
--no discipline issues resulting in ISS or OSS
--complete 8 hours of community service per semester

What is DECA?
DECA stands for “an association of marketing students.” It is a co-curricular club that prepares emerging leaders and entrepreneurs to be college and career-ready. Our competitions consist of role plays, presentations, and/or written events that put into practice marketing concepts learned in the classroom.

E-Sports

E-Sports Club provides an opportunity for gamers to get together and do what they love—Gaming! Video games from the PC world, X-box, Nintendo Switch, and PlayStation are available in room 301. In addition, competitive gamers get to play in E-sports tournaments around Charlotte and represent SVHS.

Meetings: Last Thursday of the month from 3:15 to 4:00 p.m.

FFA makes a positive difference in the lives of students by developing their potential for premier leadership, personal growth, and career success through agricultural education.

Membership dues are $15 per year, allowing students to participate in all FFA events and activities.

The welfare of our environment is vital to all living things. We believe that it is equally important to educate our students and student body about how they can improve the quality of the environment. Our club participates in first-hand service projects, fundraising, volunteering with animal shelters, gardening, recycling, campus cleanups, and public awareness campaigns of environmental issues in our community and world.

The Inter-Club Council is a group of student representatives from each current active club at Sun Valley High School. The goal of ICC is to allow club leaders to work together to encourage engagement and participation by the student body in all extra-curricular activities. ICC also gives student leaders a forum where successes can be celebrated and concerns can be heard and addressed by the administration and/or problem-solved with their peers.

Meetings: ICC meets in room 163 every other Friday from 7:15 a.m. - 8:00 a.m.

Model United Nations

Model United Nations, also known as Model UN or MUN, is an extra-curricular activity in which students typically roleplay delegates to the United Nations and simulate UN committees. Thousands of middle school, high school, and college students across the country and around the world participate in Model United Nations, which involves substantial research, public speaking, debating, and writing skills, as well as critical thinking, teamwork, and leadership abilities.

Mu Alpha Theta

Mu Alpha Theta is a nationally chartered math honor society. To be eligible, you must have completed at least the equivalent of 2 years of college preparatory math and be enrolled in one for the current school year. You also must have a 3.0 or higher GPA in your math classes.

Dues: $10.00 per person (one-time fee)

ALSO --- If you don’t quite qualify for this because you have not completed Math 1 and Math 2, you may still come to meetings without the $10 fee and just be part of the Math Club overall. It just means you're here to have fun with math and then join Mu Alpha Theta later on.

WHO: Who can become a math club member? Anyone who enjoys solving math problems (and is actually kind of good at it, preferably).

WHAT: We will solve challenging math problems and math puzzles and compete in math competitions.

WHEN: For now, the day and time will be determined by those interested in the club. The club may meet sometimes before school and other times after school. Stay tuned!

What’s the National Athletic Honor Society?

The National Athletic Honor Society is a society for high school athletes with the mission of recognizing, supporting, and rewarding high school student-athletes who achieve excellence in the classroom and on the “field of play.”

What are the eligibility criteria for membership?

To be a Member, he/she must satisfy all three of the following eligibility criteria:

a High School Student in a participating Member High School; maintains a cumulative 3.75 GPA;

participates in a High School Varsity athletic program for at least two seasons (including, but not limited to, Archery, Baseball, Basketball, Bowling, Cheer/Spirit Squad, Cross Country/Track & Field, Dance, Drill, Equine Sports, Fencing, Field Hockey, Football, Golf, Gymnastics, Hockey, Lacrosse, Martial Arts, Rowing/Crew, Rugby, Skiing, Soccer, Softball, Swimming/Diving, Tennis, Volleyball, Water Polo, and Wrestling) is eligible for membership;
all active members must complete at least five (5) hours of community service per school year.

Meetings: Monthly, the first Monday of each month, 7:30 am in room 110

Attendance: Members are required to attend our monthly meetings. If you are unable to attend the meeting, then you must let Coach Knight or Coach Wheatley know ahead of time.

Dues: $25 for new members, $15 for returning members / Online School Payments

National English Honor Society (NEHS)

The National English Honor Society (NEHS), founded and sponsored by Sigma Tau Delta, is the only international organization exclusively for secondary students and faculty who, in the field of English, merit special note for past and current accomplishments. Individual secondary schools are invited to petition for a local chapter, through which individuals may be inducted into Society membership. Immediate benefits of affiliation include academic recognition, scholarship and award eligibility, and opportunities for networking with others who share enthusiasm for, and accomplishment in, the language arts.

Dues paid
Must attend at least 3 meetings per school year
Must maintain a 3.0 GPA in English courses
Must have taken 2 English courses to join (Electives count)
Must participate in 3 activities & attend 3 meetings each year to maintain membership
- One activity must be done through NEHS National Club

Dues: $20 new members; $5 returning members

Membership in this chapter is an honor bestowed upon deserving students by the faculty and shall be based on the criteria of Scholarship, Service, Leadership, and Character.

Candidates eligible for selection to this chapter must be members of the junior or senior class.
To be eligible for selection for membership in this chapter, the candidate must have been in attendance for a period of one semester at Sun Valley High School.
Candidates eligible for selection to the chapter shall have and maintain a 4.0 weighted GPA. This scholastic level of achievement shall remain fixed and shall be the required minimum scholastic level of achievement for admission to candidacy.
Upon meeting the grade level, attendance, and GPA standard requirements, candidates shall then be considered based on their service, leadership, and character.

SVHS NHS Bylaws

Tutoring and Service Requirements
Your service requirement as a member of the Spartan chapter of the National Honor Society will be due by the last day of each calendar month. Each month you will need to submit the following forms indicating that you have completed two hours of tutoring and four hours of community service.

RHO Kappa Honor Society

Rho Kappa Social Studies Honor Society is the only nationwide honors society that recognizes high school juniors and seniors who acknowledge quality in Social Studies. Any accredited public or private high school can apply for a local chapter, through which individuals will be inducted into the Rho Kappa Honor Society. The Rho Kappa chapter at our school provides national recognition for outstanding students who are academically accomplished and encourages an interest in, understanding of, and appreciation for the importance of social studies.

Students interested in joining Rho Kappa must have completed 3 social studies classes with the expectation of completing 5. Students must have an unweighted G.P.A. of 3.0. Students are also required to have 10 service hours per year. Yearly dues are $20.00.

Students may pick up an application from Ms. Flannery in Room 101.

Applications and dues need to be given to Ms. Flannery before or after school.

The mission of “El Valle" Spanish Club is to help create an understanding of and promote enthusiasm for the various aspects of Spanish-speaking culture and language.

Students do not need to be in Spanish class or speak Spanish to join Spanish Club! Membership is open to any student who wishes to learn more about the Spanish language and Spanish-speaking culture.

There is a one-time $5.00 fee to help cover the expenses of the club.

Meetings: Meetings will be held in room 132 on Tuesdays from 3:05 until 4:45. Club meetings will be announced in class and on the announcements.
